There are a number of different types of model boats available ranging from yachts to battleships. Some of the most popular model boats are scaled down replicas of famous historical battleships and some of them even included working gun turrets that use compressed air to fire ball bearings. Some modelling enthusiasts who have built battleships will pit their creations against other people model boats and attempt to sink them.
Model boats of all varieties are typically constructed from lightweight woods such as balsa to maintain buoyancy. Model boats with sails such as model yachts utilise the wind for propulsion and the person controlling the yacht will use radio controls to manipulate the sails and therefore alter the course of the boats travel. Some model boats use powered engines to propel them forward and some high end model boats contain small, but powerful petrol driven engines allowing them to achieve surprisingly high speeds.
